Aboriginal Voices Sound Recording Project

The Aboriginal Voices Project was conceived as the first phase in an on-going endeavor to preserve native histories and oral traditions.

The recordings conducted under the direction of Dr. John Newman, Department of Linguistics, University of Alberta, utilized the department’s mobile recording lab. To date, 16 CDs have been recorded between the spring of 2004 and the fall of the same year.

The recordings are short stories that relate to traditional views of the world, fishing, hunting, medicinal plants, and the animal world. The stories are told by people from the Nakoda, Blackfoot, Ojibway, and Cree nations, in their native languages and in English. From our touch-screen kiosk, located inside the museums exhibit area, visitors can listen to the stories, some with translation and some without.

Watch for Phase II of this exciting project coming in 2006-2007.
